Vacuum excavation, also known as suction excavation, is a non-destructive digging method used to safely expose buried utilities and remove soil or debris without conventional mechanical excavation. Compressed air or high-pressure water loosens the ground before a powerful vacuum removes the material into a sealed debris tank.

Vacuum and suction excavation are particularly useful where buried services, restricted access or complex site conditions make traditional excavation higher risk. The controlled process can reduce the likelihood of utility damage, minimise the size of excavations and reduce disruption and reinstatement requirements.
Vac-Ex machines can excavate to depths of up to 30 metres, reach horizontally up to 80 metres and have been used for vertical applications of around 50 metres, giving project teams a practical solution where conventional excavation may be difficult or unsuitable.

1. Ground loosening
Compressed air is directed through an insulated AIR-EX lance to loosen and aerate the ground. Where ground conditions are more compacted, high-pressure water can be used instead.
2. Material removal
The vacuum excavator generates high airflow and suction, drawing loosened soil and debris through the suction hose into the sealed debris container.
3. Filtration
Airborne material is separated inside the debris chamber before the remaining air passes through a filtration system and is filtered to 5 microns before discharge.
4. Transport and disposal
Excavated material remains contained within the sealed unit, helping reduce spillages and cross-contamination. Depending on the machine and project requirements, material can be discharged to ground, bulk bags, wheelbarrows, skips, stockpiles or controlled disposal areas.
The main benefits of vacuum and suction excavation are improved control around buried services, reduced risk of utility damage, smaller excavations, less manual digging and lower levels of disruption compared with many traditional excavation methods.
