Solution

  1. The mobilisation of 1 of our fleet of 32 tonne 8 wheeled Vac-Ex hire units c/w the “Mega” hydraulic power arm for maximum radial whilst excavating.
  2. The operators were all experienced National Grid Person(Substation)accredited/trained, therefore eligible to undertake the complex works.
  3. The computerised “height restrictor” was enabled on the machine to govern the Vac-Ex unit, so the agreed height limit would not be exceeded.

Conclusion

The Vac-Ex element of all the nationwide works were all completed to the tight program with great production rates and zero strikes.

Trial of HVO Fuel at Riverside Newland Selby

Plant operator using 32T Mega Arm Vac-ExMega arm in operation

      Project – Riverside Newland, Selby

Client – Bam Nuttall & Environmental Agency

      Background

Vac-Ex were contacted by Bam Nuttall to conduct a vacuum excavation project down the side of a concrete retaining flood defence wall in Selby, in order to expose existing services prior to the demolition of the wall.

      As a company we took this opportunity to trial the HVO fuel on this site. There were many factors to consider when implementing the new fuel system including;

      • Ease of supply of fuel
      • Storage of the fuel on site
      • Compatibility within the engine of the 32 tonne “Mega Arm” Vac-Ex
      • Power of the 32 tonne “Mega Arm” Vac-Ex compared to HVO to Diesel
      • Fuel consumption of HVO fuel compared to Diesel
      • Carry out a conclusion to check on the CO2 greenhouse gas produced with HVO compared to Diesel

      Job Description

      HVO Trial

The programme for carrying out the works was 10 days however the project was concluded in 7 days.

      Supply of Fuels

The HVO fuel was supplied by Crown Oils with no problems found. We used a 5,000 Litres bunded bowser supplied by Crown Oils with an additional cost to the site for delivery and collection.

Compatability of HVO fuel with the Mercedes 32 tonne “Mega Arm” Vac-Ex

We placed our senior CPCS plant operator on this contract to give his opinion of the HVO fuel when compared to diesel and no problems were identified when using HVO fuel compared to diesel.

Mercedes have no problem using HVO fuel in their engines and do not foresee any issues arising from using the fuel with the Mercedes 32 tonne “Mega Arm” Vac-Ex or any of their engines.

      Key Issues

Unknown services along the existing flood defence wall and demolished section. Trial of HVO fuel powering a 32 tonne “Mega Arm” Vac-Ex Mercedes vehicle.

      Solution

Use of 32 tonne “Mega Arm” Vac-Ex trialling HVO fuel to uncover uncharted, privately installed services.

      Conclusion

Power of the 32 tonne “Mega Arm” Vac-Ex comparing HVO to Diesel

Our plant operator found no problems or loss of power and suction when using HVO fuel and there were no reported mechanical issues with the 32 tonne “Mega Arm” Vac-Ex powered with HVO fuel throughout excavation works.

      CO2 Fuel Comparison

2,000 litres of HVO Fuel resulted in only 0.390 tonne CO2 greenhouse gas released into the atmosphere compared to 2,000 litres of Diesel Fuel which generates 7.2 tonne CO2 greenhouse gas released into the atmosphere

A 260 metre stretch of excavation was successfully achieved, uncovering unknown services with ZERO strikes. There were no reported incidents in respect of service strikes.

                    Background

The huge steel platform forming the deck of the Salford vertical lifting bridge had fallen nearly 60 feet to the ground from its four supporting concrete towers, during the ongoing construction of a new dual carriageway. Vac-Ex were asked to provide one of our vacuum excavation units to aid in the removal of counterweights.

                        Highways Duct Insertion

                        Background

Vac-Ex were recently asked to come up with a highway excavation solution by a major Blue chip customer working for Highways England, on one of the busiest motorway interchanges in the UK. Upon meeting the clients Health and Safety criteria, along with a very tight program which was paramount for all the stakeholders involved, the works were completed successfully.

                        Job Description

The nature of the job was to insert an additional communications cable encased in a plastic 75mm diameter ducting for a chainage of 400 metres. After a site consultation was conducted on an evening shift, the vacuum excavation unit which was identified from our diverse range was the 32 tonne “Mega” Vac-Ex complete with the “Mega Arm” Hydraulic Power Arm. The unit has an 8 metre radial for the extra reach, which was required to reach over the traffic barrier adjacent to the hard shoulder. It was further realised that a “Verge Tipping” 32 tonne 8 wheel vacuum excavation unit would be beneficial in order to tip the excavated material onto the verge, allowing collection by grab. This saved time on the Vac-Ex CPCS Accredited plant operator having to leave the traffic management to tip, meaning the unit would be spending more time vacuum excavating.

                        Key Issues

Upon breaking ground, it was quickly established that the trench was littered with existing underground services, 40% of these being uncharted and with little room for our 250mm diameter suction hose with our Vac-Ex designed “non-conductive” plastic dig pipe to get within the centres of the existing underground services.

                        Solution

This being the case, we called upon our sister Design and Manufacture business to fabricate a 150mm reducer with a “non-conductive” plastic dig pipe, this enabled us to have better visibility of the excavation and to further eliminate any chance of service strikes.

                        Conclusion

The contract was completed safely and exceeded the client’s expectations getting ahead of program with no damage to any existing services. The completion of this project took over 500,000 hours of working safely and strike free. The ethos of our business and achievements we are extremely proud of. Works completed to programme with ZERO strikes. There were no reported incidents in respect of service strikes.

                            Background

Vac-Ex have recently completed a vacuum excavation project at Drax Power Station near Goole. The station was changed from a coal fired station to one running on Biomass Fuel.

                            Job Description

Two 32t Mega vacuum excavation units were supplied to the contractor, Shepherds of York and the existence of all services were proved.

                            Conclusion

Works completed to programme with ZERO strikes. There were no reported incidents in respect of service strikes.
